    Temel Bilgiler
    Alaska mezgiti (aynı zamanda Alaska kömür balığı diye de bilinir) orta derinliklerde yaşayan bir ba-lıktır ve Kuzey Pasifik’in her yerine dağılmış olsa da yoğun bir şekilde Doğu Bering Denizi’nde bulu-nur. 90 santimetre uzunluğa ve 4 kilo ağırlığa ulaşabilen balığın ömrü ortalama 28 yıldır. Bu tip mez-gitler, fok ve deniz aslanları tarafından yendiği için Kuzey Pasifik ekosisteminde önemli bir rol oynar.
    Batı Bering Denizi’ndeki (FAO 61) Alaska mezgit balığı, aşırı avlanma yüzünden kırmızı kategoride yer alıyor. Bunun doğaya etkisi veya düzenleyici tedbirlerin etkileri hakkında güvenilir bilgi yok.
